A whole house air purifier works with your central HVAC system to treat air as it moves through the ductwork, helping reduce airborne particles throughout the home instead of cleaning only one room at a time.

Filters that are too restrictive can reduce airflow, leading to longer run times, reduced comfort, frozen coils, and added wear on the blower system. This is why choosing the highest-rated filter available is not always the right answer.

A qualified technician should consider filter cabinet size, return duct capacity, blower performance, equipment specifications, and the current condition of the system. In some cases, a larger filter cabinet can provide effective filtration with less resistance than a thin, highly restrictive filter installed in a standard grille.

Understand Filter Ratings

MERV ratings describe how effectively a filter captures particles of different sizes. During regular HVAC service, a technician can also check for filter bypass, drainage problems, coil buildup, and airflow concerns that affect both comfort and air quality.

Homeowners can help by keeping supply and return vents open and unobstructed, using the correct filter size, and paying attention to changes in airflow or unusual odors. If a filter is visibly loaded with dust well before its expected replacement interval, that may indicate a larger issue with return leakage, construction debris, or unusually high particle levels in the home.

Before choosing a whole house air purifier, ask what problem it is intended to solve and whether the HVAC system has enough airflow capacity for it.
